GHS Pictogram for Unstable Explosives

Hazard pictograms are a major component of the GHS (Globally Harmonized System for Hazard Classification and Labelling of Chemicals). The GHS includes two sets of pictograms: one set used for labelling containers and for workplace hazard warnings, and a second set used during the transport of dangerous goods (TDG).

The GHS pictogram is a graphical representation that includes a symbol along with other graphic elements such as a border, background pattern or color intended to convey specific information. The GHS pictograms are intended to replace older systems such as Canada's WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) and the European Union pictograms as defined in the Dangerous Substances Directive. Pictograms are not required for certain types of hazardous products; those products are listed later in this article.

The following is a description of the GHS pictograms used for labelling containers and for workplace hazard warnings.

NOTE: The 'Corrosive' pictogram appears twice, as it represents both physical and health hazards.

Exploding Bomb (Physical Hazard)
1. Unstable explosives
2. Explosives
(divisions 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, and 1.4)
3. Self-reactive substances
and mixtures (types A and B)
4. Organic peroxides
(types A and B)

Flame (Physical Hazard)
1. Flammable gases
(category 1)
2. Flammable aerosols
(categories 1 and 2)
3. Flammable liquids

5. Self-reactive substances
and mixtures
(types B, C, D, E, and F)
6. Pyrophoric liquids
(category 1)
7. Pyrophoric solids

8. Self-heating substances
and mixtures
(categories 1 and 2)
9. Substances and mixtures
which emit flammable gases
when in contact with water
(categories 1, 2, and 3)
10. Organic peroxides
(types B, C, D, E, and F)

Flame over Circle (Physical Hazard)
1. Oxidizing gases
(category 1)
2. Oxidizing liquids
(categories 1, 2, and 3)
3. Oxidizing solids
(categories 1, 2, and 3)

2. Skin irritation
(categories 2 and 3)
3. Eye irritation
(category 2A)
4. Dermal sensitizer
(category 1)
5. Target organ toxicity /
specific target organ toxicity
following single exposure
(category 3: narcotic effects,
respiratory irritation)

Chronic Health Hazard
1. Respiratory sensitizer
(category 1)
2. Germ cell mutagenicity

specific target organ toxicity
following repeated exposure
(categories 1 and 2)
7. Aspiration toxicity
(categories 1 and 2)

Environmental Hazard
1. Acute aquatic toxicity
(category 1)
2. Chronic aquatic activity
(categories 1 and 2)

No Pictogram Required:
1. Physical Hazards:
a. Explosives (
divisions 1.5 and 1.6)
b. Flammable gases
(category 2)
c. Self-reactive substances
and mixtures (type G)
