Allergy Awareness  for Food Workers

One of the greatest concerns and a standard complaint of persons with severe food allergies is that workers who handle their food not only do not understand the seriousness of their situation, but may not know how to respond if an emergency should occur. This short course for food workers attempts to address those concerns, and to clarify the differences between food allergies and food intolerances.

Many persons without direct personal or family experience do not understand the extreme anxiety that food allergies can create for allergic persons dining out. This course helps food service workers and food establishments feel better prepared by knowing what causes food allergy reactions, how to prevent them, and what to do should a serious allergic reaction occur. Having confident staff trained in food allergy response not only reassures allergic clients that you care, but helps to produce loyal repeat customers.

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Define ‘allergy’ and ‘anaphylaxis’
  • Discuss which persons are most likely to experience food related reactions
  • Relate to the concerns of persons with food allergies
  • Recognize the symptoms of anaphylaxis
  • Differentiate allergies from other food intolerances
  • Recognize the Health Canada priority allergens
  • Plan to prevent anaphylaxis
  • React to an anaphylaxis emergency

Food establishments benefit both directly and indirectly from improved worker awareness of the food allergy issue, which appears to be increasing in the general population.  Better training in food allergy procedures results in improved staff confidence and workplace morale, lowered accident and absenteeism rates, and can result in a dramatic rise in trust and loyalty amongst knowledgeable clients. If you take the problem seriously, word gets around that it’s a safe place to eat.

Students proceed through self-paced and graphical, narrated lessons and a final quiz. Quiz results are automatically scored and stored for management reference. For multiple enrollments, the Simply! Tracking program provides managers with access to completion data, batch certificate printing, expiry notifications, and training done and training due reports.
